"The Letter" ~ Writers Island
The letter…
could have been on any sheet of paper…
love letters,
rejection letters, acceptance letters,
congratulation letters
travel letters, year-end missives,
the letters after my name…
But what about
"the letter,"
just one letter,
any of twenty-six
for this part of the world
where words seem to matter…
one letter
a p,
an r,
maybe an a…
just one…
would you leave it all by itself
swimming in a sea of white…
give it some color,
pack other letters around it
so that a sound escapes the page,
a meaning
looking out from a flat surface,
giving roundness and depth
to silence and nothingness…
a single letter
balancing on the edge becoming
the bridge between me and you
and a language shared
from that first line into a curve
into an ending point
where letter and word marry
and you hear me speak
for the first time…

Ditto to all! I never would've thought to do this....
What would we all do, without this "Coming together" that the web offers????

What a beautiful take on the prompt, the first thing that came to mind is the sanskrit Aum(Om), even though it looks like a single letter/symbol, it's actually a combination of three sounds, a syallable really. But somehow this post took me there...thank you.

Were letter and word marry. What a very origianl take on the letter. Great writing

so wonderfully constructed and visual for me. I love the concept of not leaving a single letter alone that could not give voice to what it has to say, so needs the surround letters to complete it. Very nice and a joy to read.

a meaning
looking out from a flat surface,
giving roundness and depth
to silence and nothingness…
oh so nice use of words, I really want to invent a letter which can get rid of the depth of the silence and nothingness.
excellent Lea!

There are several lines I wanted to quote, but I could decide on just one. This is such a wonderful poem. It makes you look at each letter in a new light, each brimming with endless possibilities.
