Glass Mosaics with Ellen Blakeley

Soooo...
with my studio space all torn up...
I was very fortunate to spend this past weekend in the studio of glass mosaic artist and teacher Ellen Blakeley...

Dsc03881_2

Now how is this for space???

Ellen is a delight.

Dsc03884_2

She is quite fun, very talented, a great teacher, and gracious and generous with technique, inspiration, and finding order in the chaos of students in all sorts of material all at once!!!

Ellen was the innovator of discovering how to use tempered glass for mosaic art. Over the past sixteen years she has perfected this art medium into a tile and art business that is brilliant, literally. Her pieces  are sometimes enormous, finishing walls, sinks, and even waterfalls. In the picture above, Ellen is standing on a table top, with bowls spheres beyond. Ellen's art has changed how glass tile can be used and installed in all sorts installations, concepts that were before, thought to be impossible.

Dsc03886

Ellen is a true artist, for she doesn't see impossible, she always sees that there is a way...

Dsc03898

So, eight of us dove into learning some beginning techniques of working with tempered glass...

Dsc03899

while Ellen and her assistant Kate (on the left) gave us guidance...

Dsc03903

I loved working with this medium...

Dsc03900

and learned a lot...
And I'm loving all the new ways I can think of now...
to fill my new space...

Dsc03907

All Torn Up...

My studio is all torn up...

Dsc03877

Power saws and blades, hammers and nails,
rulers, tapes and levels,
have replaced my paints and glass, clay,
paper and gourds...

Dsc03906

and all chaos reigns in the space that houses
our guestroom and the nook where I create...

Dsc03879

New counters and shelves are going in...

Dsc03905_2

and a whole new awareness of gratitude
for having a space to create in...

Sixth Holy Night 2007 ~ Warming and Cooling

Dsc03750

This morning...
in my dance practice
I noticed how I move in and out
of warming and cooling...

Emotions flare, flame, and ignite...
as I move my body,
following my breath,
a cooling happens
and the fire of my passion
begins to meld into the shape of my feet,
my hands
and the beat of my heart...

And then...
the music changes...
I am frozen,
numb,
nothing moves in this land of ice...
frigid,
I reach for the next breath
and the heat of my heart
begins a slow thaw...
a warming
as muscle fibers stretch
and begin to twirl,
leap,
and cascade into a melting steam
of self and other
moving as one...
we begin again...

Élizabeth-Louise Vigée-LeBrun & a Trip to the Petit Trianon From Afar

Twenty six years ago I stepped into the Louvre in Paris, France for the first time...

Dsc02260

That entire trip was a faerie tale and a pivot in time that would forever change the course of my life...

With awe at the masterpieces before me, I fell in love with art of a woman painter from the 18th-19th century... stepping from room to room, her pieces appeared before me, drawing me to them like a light...

Dsc02239

(Self Portrait - 1789)

Over the years since, I have delved into the history of Marie Élizabeth-Louise Vigée-LeBrun, 1755 to 1842. I discovered that not only did she become a prolific and well recognized painter from the 18th-19th century, but that she was friend and one of Marie-Antoinette's favorite artists, and was invited to not only paint portraits of the queen and the queen and her children, but rooms and ceilings in Versailles, especially noteworthy, the chapel...

Here are some pictures that I took this recent trip...

another self portrait....

Dsc02254

This past Friday, the showing of Marie-Antoinette and the Petit Trianon at Versailles was opened at San Francisco's Legion of Honor. This is the first time that any of these pieces have ever left France. There simplicity, and intricacy, craftsmanship and style, established a foundation for color and style to come... So it was a treat beyond belief to spend time in their beauty and in the presence of SIX Elizabeth Vigée-LeBrun paintings!!! Ulla came as my guest. She arrived upon my porch with tail and all...

Dsc03506

We then proceeded to place our "mouches" which is "fly" in French and the word for those little black beauty marks!

Dsc03508

Dsc03516

Here's a little map, or "mouchology", that Ulla gave me along with five mouches!!! For where ever you place these beauty marks has a secret meaning...

Dsc03564

Unfortunately, no pictures are allowed within the special exhibits at the Legion of Honor so here are some befores and afters and a final view of two of Élizabeth Vigée-LeBrun's most famous paintings...

The flower decorations were gorgeous... but not quite as lovely as Ulla...

Dsc03521

Some how... food always makes it into my posts... Ulla and I shared a lovely lunch at the Legion of Honor's café while waiting for the exhibit to open...

Dsc03524

And browsed afterward in the gift shop where we were tempted, oh let me tell you!!!

Dsc03548

In closing this longggg post, I will leave you with these two paintings... They were both painted the same year by LeBrun, in 1783. The first caused quite a stir when LeBrun placed the painting in the Salon in Paris. People were outraged, claiming that the queen was being shown in underwear, or common folk dress... Notice, no jewelry, simple head attire, although a bit of a flare with the feather in her straw hat, and the muted roses, and modest decolletage...

Dsc03563

LeBrun removed the painting and painted the following. The queen's pose, facial expression, and hand positions are exactly the same. However, now she is wearing a form-fitting fancy satin dress with intricate lace, low decolletage, hair frizzed and powdered in the style of the time, fancy hat with many feathers, neck and wrists adorned with pearls, and her hands hold a dazzling pink rose... this painting was accepted, but the grumbles and projections of people from afar and near Marie-Antoinette continued to grow...

Dsc03522

I believe the first painting shows more of the true personality and feelings of the Marie-Antoinette that has come to be layered with so many projections and fables that the real woman is hidden from us all... except in tiny glimpses here and there and in these portraits. Oh how I would love to know just what transpired in the conversations between these two women...

I continue to be fascinated by this entire period of time... and now, I can't believe its true... but I would hop on a plane tomorrow just to wander the grounds of the Petit Trianon...

Dsc02155

and looking at all the amazing art,
like my piece Hesperia,
who won an award,
but alas, did not sell
as her price was a bit high
for the occasion...

She was greatly admired,
which did make my heart swell with gratitude...

It was such a wonderful day and event,
done with such class,
delicious food, wine, music
and for such a good cause,
feeding and nourishing those so in need...

And a wonderful stepping stone for me...

Dsc02163

as I already have ideas
for what I will create for next year!

Spirit Piercing Matter

That place...

Where spirit pierces matter...
Eros draws his bow...
and takes aim...

That point
in the ground...

Dsc01321

energy coiling,
waiting for release...

Dsc01388

sweet release
in being found...
set free...
creative energy
moving
up and out
after the strike of lightening,
of the sword piercing the dragon
setting it free...

Where is that potent point in your sweet, creative life???

A Sunday Through The Looking Glass

What an amazing, magical Sunday...

Ulla and her daughter Rowan picked me up and whisked me away to a place that was indeed... way beyond the Looking Glass...

Dsc01143

A group of blogging women, artists extroidinaire, all gathered at the beautiful home of Lauren...

Dsc01137

and pure delight ensued... conversations, laughter, sharing of ideas and creativity and a gifting of gifts and heart that was moving and precious...

Dsc01164

So many topics were discussed in all directions... new friendships made... older connections renewed, and new connections made of those not even physically there... like Shelly who will hopefully read this and discover how loved you are, finding that there is a group of us who consider you a kindred spirit!!!!

It was quite profound to have all these "urls of cyberspace" all in one place, real, tangible, three-dimensional... able to respond to you in the exact moment...

I searched for a poem to capture this essence, this feeling, and these were the words that came to me in a quiet moment when I slipped down the hall to write...

A Sunday...
where magic
comes
to rest in lace and antiques,
in color and grace...
where laughter
dances and bubbles
through rooms
and halls
of beauty...
where friendships
feast on
a love of sharing
passion
found in the solitude
of creating,
where a simple pulse
of current
takes form...
spirit into matter,
this gift of word and image...

Thank you Lauren and Callen, Corey, Mary, Nicol, Donna, Sharon, and my dear Ulla (who is so always full of surprises...) and Rowan for such an amazing and magical day through the looking glass... and thank you each, for the beauty, joy, and laughter that you bring into form, and into the world...

An Iris Garden

I so love my Tuesday afternoons
with my dear Alexander Valley watercolor ladies...

This last Tuesday,
we painted irises,
each so different, in color,
in the way the petals fall in the light
and shadow...
